I am sitting here with four books which I have to return to the Galesburg Public Library, and I'm wondering if maybe there were five, but I can't find another. I will probably return those four and hope for the best. Oh the pleasures of becoming old!
Jackson has several dozen biographies written about him. I started out by listing them in a notebook and would actually like to transpose that list here but will probably do that another time. It's curious how some of them have found their way online, others not; some are held by a library, others not; some are on ku, others not.
Here's what I've got, here, in front of me.
Meacham, Jon. (2008). American Lion.
Remini, Robert. (2008). Andrew Jackson.
Great Soldier series.
Brands, H.W. (2015). Andrew Jackson: His Life and Times.
Marrin, A. (2004). Old Hickory: Andrew Jackson and the American People This is a very colorful one, interesting, with a few flippant remarks about the Scotch Irish, racism, etc., all the big issues.
I found about thirty altogether. Our library had these, which I grabbed. The Knox College library has about a dozen. Online there are some of the older ones, free; on Amazon there are about a dozen for sale. Some are just out there somewhere, listed but not available.
I can't say much about these because I haven't read them. I will say that Meacham wrote about several presidents and has been accused of being too sympathetic to them. Remini wrote half a dozen about Jackson, this one about his soldiering alone, or at least part of the "Great Soldier" series.
I ended up reading another one by Remini on KU, because i could read it on my phone.
Remini, Robert. (2024). The Life of Andrew Jackson. I need to be more specific on this if I am to develop my historical abilities. It was good; I'm about halfway through; he is relatively objective and interesting.
One can tell a little about how objective they are by how they handle his birth and marriage, two of thhe most controversial topics. I could document this for each one. But I have backed off of my original goal of writing one myself, so I don't feel I need to do this right now. Instead, I've become interested in other presidents, and simply in finding out what else is out there. Particularly, what can be obtained on ku.
But my KU has lapsed.
